Konami has unveiled the first trailer for Silent Hill f, the latest installment in the iconic Silent Hill franchise. Set in 1960s Japan, this new entry follows protagonist Shimizu Hinako as she navigates a nightmarish transformation of her hometown, which is suddenly engulfed in an eerie and malevolent fog. Faced with grotesque monsters and sinister puzzles, she must fight to survive while uncovering the mystery behind the town’s horrific change.
According to the game’s official description, Silent Hill f tells the story of an ordinary teenager whose life takes a terrifying turn: “Shimizu Hinako was living her life as an ordinary teenager … that is, until her town is suddenly shrouded in fog and begins to change in a horrific way. Now, she must explore a town she no longer recognizes while solving puzzles, fighting strange enemies, and doing everything she can to survive in order to face the ultimate decision that she must make. This is a tale about a beautiful yet terrifying choice.”
Unlike previous Silent Hill games, Silent Hill f introduces an entirely new narrative rather than continuing the established lore. However, Konami has hinted that longtime fans will find Easter eggs sprinkled throughout the experience. The game takes place in the fictional town of Ebisugaoka, inspired by Kanayama, Gero, in Japan’s Gifu Prefecture, adding a distinct cultural backdrop to the horror.
Ryukishi07, a celebrated Japanese visual novelist known for his work on the Higurashi and Umineko series, penned the game’s story, ensuring a gripping and psychological horror experience. Meanwhile, creature and character designer kera [stylized in lowercase] has provided insight into the monstrous threats that players will encounter: “I love the Silent Hill series, and it’s been a big influence on me. In particular, I am constantly remembering Silent Hill 2, and the messages on the walls, the music, and the monster designs. So, when it came to Silent Hill f and bringing the setting to Japan, we had to come up with something that felt just a little different. The monster designs were the hardest. I had to consider everything that’s come in Silent Hill before and figure out how to take this game in a different direction, but still be Silent Hill. It might not be the exact same blood-smeared, rusting scenery, but I sincerely hope you’ll enjoy our vision and the world we’ve created.”
The game’s soundtrack is another highlight, featuring compositions by longtime series composer Akira Yamaoka, alongside Kensuke Inage, known for his work on the Dynasty Warriors series. Their music is expected to heighten the tension and eerie atmosphere that Silent Hill is renowned for.
While Konami has yet to announce an official release date, Silent Hill f is set to launch on PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X/S, and PC. Fans of the franchise can anticipate a fresh yet familiar horror experience, blending the series’ psychological terror with a unique Japanese setting.
