Texas Instruments Unveils World’s Smallest, Fastest, and Most Efficient 4K UHD Display Controller
By DaMarko Webster
In an exciting development for home entertainment and gaming, Texas Instruments (TI) has introduced a groundbreaking display controller that paves the way for the most compact, high-performance 4K ultra-high-definition (UHD) projectors yet. The new DLPC8445 display controller, measuring a mere 9mm by 9mm—about the size of a pencil eraser—enables stunning 100-inch or larger diagonal displays with ultra-low latency and vivid image quality.
This diminutive powerhouse is designed to work in tandem with TI’s DLP472TP digital micromirror device (DMD) and the DLPA3085 power-management integrated circuit (PMIC) with LED driver. Together, these components allow designers to deliver display experiences that rival high-end televisions and gaming monitors, all in a portable projector format.
“Consumers are increasingly looking for immersive display experiences beyond traditional setups,” said Jeff Marsh, vice president and general manager of DLP Products at TI. “With our new controller, a lifestyle or gaming projector can turn any wall into a massive 4K UHD screen, offering crisp, clear visuals previously only available on large TVs or monitors. This innovation showcases TI DLP technology’s ability to help engineers craft spectacular, mobile-friendly displays.”
Bringing Big-Screen Gaming and Projection Anywhere
The trend towards lifestyle and gaming projectors continues to rise as consumers seek to elevate their entertainment experiences. The DLPC8445 controller, when paired with the DLP472TP DMD, delivers submillisecond display latency, on par with the most advanced gaming monitors, effectively eliminating lag and enhancing gameplay responsiveness.
For the first time, TI’s DLP chipset includes support for variable refresh rate (VRR), allowing for seamless synchronization of frame rates. This feature helps prevent issues like image tearing and stuttering, crucial for a fluid gaming experience. Additionally, advanced image-correction features automatically adjust for surface imperfections, making it easy to enjoy high-quality visuals anywhere. Notably, this is also the first DLP controller designed specifically for laser-illuminated, battery-powered projectors, enhancing portability and convenience for on-the-go entertainment.
Texas Instruments’ latest offering signifies a major leap forward in the evolution of projectors, blending cutting-edge technology with practical design to meet the demands of modern consumers. Whether for gaming or cinematic experiences, the DLPC8445 sets a new standard for portable, high-quality displays.
