Versace Mercury Redefines Footwear Innovation

By Lacrae Benson

The Versace Mercury is a testament to innovative craftsmanship, seamlessly blending futuristic advancements with the timeless sophistication of the House’s heritage. This sci-fi-influenced design conceals a complex structure, comprising 86 meticulously crafted components that are expertly cut and stitched together. The upper and lining alone consist of 30 pieces per pair, creating a cocoon of comfort, protection, and support.

Each pair is skillfully hand-woven with 16 meters of crochet rope by artisans who dedicate three hours to the weaving and application process. The design features distinctive zigzag roping and 15 precisely stitched components, embodying a labor of love and a testament to enduring artistry.

The upper showcases handmade woven lace, a dynamic focal point of the design. The new EVA sole, adorned with the House’s Greca pattern and a hand-painted interior, ensures both comfort and lightweight construction.

The shoe’s design is recognizable through its subtle and understated branding. Personalization details include metal Versace lettering on the metal-plated heel, subtle Versace lettering on the tongue and eyelets, and a ribbon featuring the Greca motif in tonal jacquard. Notably, for the first time, the style code, country of manufacture, and size scales are printed inside the tongue.

A team of 27 craftspeople collaboratively assemble all elements with great care, creating a fully ‘Made-in-Italy’ shoe that speaks to the soul of Versace and captures the essence of the House’s storied legacy.
