The British Fashion Council (BFC) announces Taya Francis as the inaugural recipient of the Joe Casely-Hayford scholarship

The British Fashion Council (BFC) has introduced the BFC Foundation MA Joe Casely-Hayford Scholarship, naming Taya Francis as the inaugural recipient. Additionally, a Special Recognition Award has been announced posthumously for the late designer.

Joe Casely-Hayford will be honored at The Fashion Awards (TFA) 2023 on December 4th, where both the posthumous award and the newly established scholarship will pay homage to his “enduring legacy and incredible contributions to fashion and culture.”

Taya Francis, a student from Nottingham Trent University, will receive support and funding through the scholarship. The initiative is designed for students of black or mixed heritage background who either have an offer from or are currently pursuing an MA at a BFC Colleges Council member university.

The selection process for the scholarship involved evaluating applications based on talent and need, considering information provided during the application process, including the applicant’s portfolio and financial circumstances. The shortlisted applications underwent review by a panel comprising a member of the Casely-Hayford family and key industry representatives.

Casely-Hayford, known for his support of young talent, and the scholarship aim to recognize black British culture and its profound influence on wider British culture, particularly within the creative industries.

Caroline Rush, BFC Chief, expressed congratulations to Taya Francis and excitement about the scholarship’s launch. She stated, “We are thrilled to launch this scholarship and play our part in strengthening and future-proofing the pipeline of fashion talent from all backgrounds all while paying tribute to the genius of Joe Casely-Hayford.”

The posthumous Special Recognition Award for Casely-Hayford acknowledges his role as one of the most talented and groundbreaking designers, contributing to London’s reputation as a global fashion and cultural hub. His legacy includes paving the way for generations of designers and unwavering support for young fashion talent.

Casely-Hayford initiated his career at the Tailor and Cutter Academy, followed by studies at St Martin’s School of Art. In 1984, he and his wife, Maria, established their fashion house, and in 2005, he became the creative director of Gieves and Hawkes. In 2009, he relaunched his business as Casely-Hayford in collaboration with his son Charlie. He passed away at the age of 62 in early 2019 after battling cancer.
