Netflix Unleashes Monster: The Ed Gein Story with Charlie Hunnam in Chilling Lead

By Kyra Greene
Netflix is pulling back the curtain on one of the darkest chapters in American true crime with the release of the first teaser for Monster: The Ed Gein Story, set to premiere on October 3.
This latest installment in Ryan Murphy and Ian Brennan’s Emmy-winning anthology shifts its gaze from Dahmer and Menendez to the infamous figure whose grotesque crimes redefined horror: Ed Gein. Known as the “Ghoul of Plainfield,” Gein’s story has haunted cultural memory for decades, inspiring filmic nightmares like Psycho, The Texas Chain Saw Massacre, and The Silence of the Lambs.
Charlie Hunnam leads the series as Gein, delivering what creators describe as a raw and unflinching portrait of the man behind the monster. The cast also includes Tom Hollander, Laurie Metcalf, and Suzanna Son, with Vicky Krieps, Olivia Williams, Lesley Manville, Joey Pollari, Charlie Hall, Tyler Jacob Moore, Mimi Kennedy, Will Brill, and Robin Weigert rounding out the ensemble.
Murphy has framed this season around the central question: are monsters born, or are they made? “With Gein,” he explains, “the answer may be both.” Brennan, co-creator and executive producer, has already dubbed the installment “the best season of the three,” hinting at a mix of psychological depth and cinematic terror.
Hunnam himself echoes that sentiment: “This is a human, tender, unflinching exploration of who Ed was—putting the person at the center, not just the crimes. But also not flinching from what he did.”
With a chilling atmosphere and prestige-level performances, Monster: The Ed Gein Story promises not only to revisit the grotesque crimes that shook mid-century America but also to question the forces that create enduring nightmares.
