Mitsubishi Introduces the D:X Concept1: A Forward-Thinking Electric Van Inspired by the Delica
By DaMarko Webster
Mitsubishi has taken the wraps off the D:X Concept1, a futuristic electric vehicle (EV) van that draws inspiration from the Delica, bearing the symbolic name “discover and experience.” This innovative vehicle made its debut at this year’s Japan Mobility Show.
Engineered with a focus on achieving carbon neutrality and off-road capability, Mitsubishi classifies the D:X Concept1 as an MPV (Multi-Purpose Vehicle). It proudly carries forward several key features from the beloved Delica, a well-known Mitsubishi off-road van from the 1990s, such as a generously spacious cabin, enhanced safety technologies, and an adventure-ready design.
The Mitsubishi D:X Concept1 embodies the design philosophy of “Maximum Space and Safety for Humans, Maximum Off-Roader for Boundaryless Adventure.” It inherits the finest attributes of the Delica while introducing a robust body structure, large-diameter tires, and protective skid plates, ensuring exceptional performance on both smooth roads and challenging terrains. The front face design features the distinctive Dynamic Shield styling and projection laser lights in a unique T-shape, enhancing not only its aesthetic appeal but also visibility on narrow or rough roads.
Inside the vehicle, passengers can indulge in luxury and convenience. The D:X boasts a glamping-inspired copper body color and a spacious cabin equipped with panoramic seats that can be adjusted both vertically and rotated, facilitating optimal positioning and promoting in-cabin communication during breaks. The transparent hood extends the driver’s field of vision, displaying essential information such as road surface conditions and front tire angles.
Furthermore, the D:X Concept1 is equipped with a voice-interactive AI concierge, offering route guidance, weather updates, and other critical information to enhance the driving experience. A collaboration with Yamaha Corporation has resulted in a cutting-edge sound system, with multiple speakers strategically positioned throughout the cabin, delivering an immersive audio experience.
Powering this impressive vehicle is a Plug-in Hybrid Electric Vehicle (PHEV) system. The electric 4WD system, in conjunction with the S-AWC integrated vehicle dynamics control system, is designed to provide a safe, stable, and comfortable ride across diverse road conditions. The PHEV system offers an EV mode for everyday use and a hybrid mode for extended journeys.
