Kitty Pryde and Emma Frost Guide New Mutants in ‘Exceptional X-Men’ Trailer

Written by the renowned Eve L. Ewing and illustrated by the immensely talented Carmen Carnero, Exceptional X-Men introduces readers to a fresh, thrilling chapter in the X-Men saga. In this latest series, Kitty Pryde and Emma Frost take on the responsibility of teaching three new mutants how to not only navigate a hostile world but also find strength in their uniqueness.

The trailer gives us a glimpse into the lives of these young mutants—Bronze, who wields metallic powers and a whip; Axo, who can stir emotions; and Melee, a stealthy fighter. Each of them turns to Kitty and Emma for guidance as they come to terms with their extraordinary abilities.

In today’s debut issue, tensions rise as Bronze’s dream concert is derailed by bigotry, but Kitty steps in just in time to save the day. Looking ahead, Exceptional X-Men #2 will feature Melee facing off against bullies who are tormenting Axo. And, in an exciting reveal, the trailer teases the arrival of a beloved X-Man—ICEMAN—in December’s issue #4. With Kitty and Emma’s differing teaching methods, can Iceman serve as the peacekeeper between the two?

Reflecting on the series, Ewing shares her thoughts on what makes the book truly stand out. “For those familiar with my work as a poet, the title Exceptional X-Men fits perfectly within a universe of X-adjectives. But more than that, these characters are exceptional because they aren’t burdened by the heavy history of the more established characters. They have no connection to Krakoa, or the larger politics of the mutant world—they’re just a group of awkward kids in the Midwest trying to figure things out, like so many young mutants before them.”

Carnero adds her excitement about the trio of new characters. “We all fell in love with Bronze, Axo, and Melee. Eve crafted such distinct personalities for each of them—they have their own hobbies, musical tastes, and emotions. When it came to designing them, everything just fell into place naturally. I can’t wait for readers to get to know them as we have.”
