Instagram is taking a rare step toward algorithmic transparency with the launch of “Your Algorithm,” a new feature that allows users to see, understand, and actively shape how Reels are recommended to them. Rather than quietly adjusting the feed behind the scenes, the platform is now surfacing the logic that drives one of its most influential discovery engines.

Accessible directly from the Reels tab, “Your Algorithm” presents users with a breakdown of the interests Instagram believes define their viewing behavior. These insights are generated through engagement signals like watch time, likes, saves, and skips, translating raw behavioral data into a readable snapshot of personal taste. For the first time, Instagram isn’t just predicting what users want — it’s showing its work.

More importantly, the feature gives users the ability to intervene. Interests can be boosted to appear more frequently, muted if they’ve become repetitive or irrelevant, or removed entirely. Users can also manually add new interests, effectively steering the algorithm in a new direction without having to retrain it through weeks of passive scrolling. The adjustments take effect in real time, reshaping the Reels feed almost immediately.

The rollout reflects a broader shift in how social platforms are responding to growing user fatigue around opaque algorithms. As feeds have become increasingly automated, many users have expressed frustration with content loops that feel difficult to escape. Instagram’s move acknowledges that frustration, positioning personalization not as a hidden system but as a collaborative process between user and platform.

There’s also a cultural layer baked into the feature. Instagram allows users to share their “Your Algorithm” snapshot to Stories, transforming what was once invisible data into something performative and social. From a creator and brand perspective, the update subtly changes the game. If users can actively boost or suppress interest categories, content performance may become less about broad virality and more about aligning with clearly defined audience signals. Instagram has launched “Your Algorithm” first in the U.S., with plans to expand globally and eventually bring similar controls to other areas of the app, including Explore and the main Feed. While the company hasn’t framed the update as a response to regulatory pressure or competition, the timing suggests a growing awareness that transparency is becoming a competitive advantage.
