The announcement comes just days before the highly anticipated return of the Game of Thrones prequel, which kicks off its second season on Sunday, June 16, at 9/8c on HBO.

“George [R.R. Martin], [showrunner] Ryan [Condal], and the rest of our incredible executive producers, cast, and crew, have reached new heights with the phenomenal second season of House of the Dragon,” said Francesca Orsi, executive vice president of HBO programming, in a statement on Thursday. “We are in awe of the dragon-sized effort the entire team has put into creating a spectacular Season 2, with a scope and scale that is only rivaled by its heart. We could not be more thrilled to continue the story of House Targaryen and watch this team burn bright again for Season 3.”

Based on Martin’s fantasy novel Fire & Blood, House of the Dragon is set 200 years before the events of Game of Thrones and delves into the intricate history of House Targaryen. The upcoming second season will depict an all-out war between the Blacks (Rhaenyra, Daemon & Co.) and the Greens (Aegon, the Hightowers, and allies). Tom Glynn-Carney, who plays Aegon, recently told TVLine that his character’s greatest fear heading into the showdown is “himself.”

“The way he’s perceived and the way he reacts to that — he’s a ticking time bomb,” Glynn-Carney shared. “Put in the wrong environment at the wrong time, with the wrong frame of mind, he’s his own worst enemy… He will not be seen as weak.”
