Game Informer Shuts Down After 33 Epic Years in the Industry
By Brian K. Neal
In a surprising twist that no one saw coming, Game Informer, the legendary magazine that has been a staple for gamers since 1991, is pressing pause—for good. Founded by Minnesota game store FuncoLand, Game Informer has been the go-to source for gaming news, reviews, and all things video games in the U.S. for over three decades. GameStop took the reins in 2000 when they bought out FuncoLand, and the magazine transitioned into the digital age in the early 2010s, complementing its ten annual print issues with a solid online presence.
However, the final boss has been defeated. In an abrupt and unexpected move, Game Informer staff were called into a meeting last Friday, only to be told by GameStop’s VP of HR that the game was over—effective immediately. According to Kotaku, all employees were laid off, with severance package details to follow.
The forthcoming 367th issue, featuring a cover story on Dragon Age: The Veilguard, will mark the end of Game Informer‘s epic saga. In an online statement (reportedly not written by the actual staff), Game Informer signed off one last time:
“After 33 thrilling years of bringing you the latest news, reviews, and insights from the ever-evolving world of gaming, it is with a heavy heart that we announce the closure of Game Informer. From the early days of pixelated adventures to today’s immersive virtual realms, we’ve been honored to share this incredible journey with you, our loyal readers. While our presses may stop, the passion for gaming that we’ve cultivated together will continue to live on. Thank you for being part of our epic quest, and may your own gaming adventures never end.”
It’s Game Over for Game Informer, but the memories—and the passion for gaming—will live on in the hearts of gamers everywhere.
