Dyson Unveils OnTrac: Its First-Ever Audio-Only Headphones
By Brian K. Neal
In a significant expansion of its audio portfolio, Dyson has announced the launch of OnTrac, its first-ever set of audio-only headphones. This product follows the Dyson Zone, a unique combination of headphones and air purifier introduced in 2023. While the Dyson Zone garnered attention for its innovative design and was featured in our best headphones round-up earlier this year, the OnTrac focuses exclusively on audio performance, promising enhanced battery life, superior noise-canceling capabilities, and customizable options that position it among the best in the market.
Dyson highlights the OnTrac’s active noise-canceling (ANC) technology as “best-in-class.” The headphones are equipped with eight onboard microphones that sample external sounds at an impressive rate of 384,000 times per second. This data is processed by a custom-built ANC algorithm designed to cancel up to 40dB of unwanted noise. Additionally, the MyDyson app (available on iOS and Android) allows users to measure and record their exposure to noise, promoting healthy listening habits and tracking noise overexposure.
The OnTrac headphones also boast an impressive battery life, offering 55 hours of playback with ANC activated. This is only slightly less than the 60 hours provided by Cambridge Audio’s new Melomania P100 headphones. Dyson has not disclosed the total battery life without ANC, but it is expected to be significantly higher. Similar to the Dyson Zone, the OnTrac’s batteries are cleverly placed in the headband, one on each side, rather than in the earcups. This design choice results in a slim side profile that balances the perceived bulk of the headband.
A standout feature of the OnTrac headphones is their customizable design. Dyson offers various options for users to change the outer caps and ear cushions to match their personal style, with over 2,000 possible color combinations. These parts are user-swappable and can be easily removed and replaced without any special tools.
With the release of OnTrac, Dyson, a brand traditionally known for its vacuum cleaners, is making a bold move into the competitive audio market. By leveraging its three decades of experience in mastering sound and reducing unwanted noise in its products, Dyson aims to challenge established audio brands like Apple, Sony, and Bose. The OnTrac headphones are a testament to Dyson’s commitment to audio excellence and innovation in a crowded market.
