Cambridge Audio Unveils Melomania P100: A New Era in Over-Ear Headphones

By Brian K. Neal

Cambridge Audio, a brand with nearly 60 years of history, has announced its first venture into the over-ear headphones market with the new Melomania P100. Expanding on its acclaimed Melomania series, previously limited to in-ear models, the P100 introduces high-fidelity wireless playback, extensive sound customization through a seven-band EQ, and an impressive battery life of over 100 hours, equating to more than four days of continuous use.

Founded in 1968, the British hi-fi audio brand has leveraged over five decades of expertise to craft the Melomania P100. These headphones are tuned to Cambridge Audio’s signature sound, renowned among audiophiles for its transparency and natural quality, allowing users to experience music as intended. Through the ‘Melomania Connect’ app available on iOS and Android, users can fine-tune their listening experience with six preset profiles or full control via the seven-band EQ.

The P100 features 40mm drivers composed of a three-layer composite material (PEEK+PU+PEEK), combining polyetheretherketone and polyurethane for a lightweight yet durable construction. Sustainability is also a key focus; the headphones are made from 50% recycled plastic and packaged in 100% plastic-free materials. Additionally, Cambridge Audio offers user-replaceable batteries and earcups, a rarity in today’s market, with plans to keep these components available for as long as the brand exists.

Additional features of the P100 include multipoint connectivity via Bluetooth 5.3, allowing simultaneous connection to two devices, and an extra wired connection (USB-C to USB-C and USB-C to 3.5mm cables included). The headphones support lossless, high-fidelity audio playback with codecs such as SBC, AAC, and aptX Adaptive up to 24-bit/96kHz. A dedicated ‘Gaming Mode’ minimizes lag for near-perfect synchronization between audio and screen.

The P100 also boasts active noise-cancelling (ANC) and an adjustable transparency mode. With ANC activated, users can enjoy 60 hours of battery life, while turning off ANC extends playback to an unprecedented 100 hours, setting a new benchmark in the industry.

Comfort is another highlight of the Melomania P100. After a week of use, the P100 proves to rival even Bose’s QuietComfort range. The headphones feature a comfortable clamping pressure, soft vegan leather earpads that remain cool, and a wide, cushioned headband for prolonged wear.

Cambridge Audio’s Melomania P100 marks a significant step in the brand’s evolution, combining high-quality sound, sustainability, and user-focused design.
