Anne Hathaway & Michaela Coel Ignite A24’s Dark New Music Odyssey

By Kyra Greene

A24 has unveiled the first official trailer for Mother Mary, David Lowery’s bold new “psychosexual pop thriller” led by Oscar-winner Anne Hathaway and Emmy-winner Michaela Coel — a pairing already sending shockwaves through film and fashion circles.

Hathaway transforms into Mother Mary, a global pop icon staging a high-stakes comeback. But before she can reclaim the spotlight, she must reunite with Sam Anselm (Coel), her once-inseparable best friend and visionary costume designer who helped define her image before their mysterious split. What begins as a request for a comeback dress quickly unravels into something deeper, darker, and far more dangerous. “There may only be one of us left standing when this is over,” Sam warns. Mary answers with chilling calm: “I know.”

The film boasts a striking ensemble including Hunter Schafer, Atheena Frizzell, Kaia Gerber, Jessica Brown Findlay, Alba Baptista, Isaura Barbé-Brown, Sian Clifford, and FKA Twigs — the latter also contributing to the film’s sonic identity.

In a move that further blurs the line between pop and cinema, Hathaway performs original songs crafted by Jack Antonoff, Charli XCX, and FKA Twigs. This trio of avant-pop architects brings a sharp, emotional pulse to the film, threading music directly into the psychological unraveling at its core.

Mother Mary arrives in theaters Spring 2026, positioning itself as one of the year’s most provocative pop-culture events.
