Google Unveils Gemini, Its Most Powerful and Extensive AI Model Yet
By DaMarko Webster
Google has introduced its latest and most advanced AI model named “Gemini.” This expansive language system encompasses various categories, including Gemini Ultra, designed for intricate tasks; Gemini Pro, optimal for a broad spectrum of tasks; and Gemini Nano, the most efficient model for mobile device tasks. With sophisticated reasoning and advanced coding, Gemini is touted as a multimodal system, capable of generalizing and seamlessly understanding and operating across different types of information such as text, code, audio, image, and video, according to Demis Hassabis, CEO and co-founder of Google DeepMind.
The Gemini models underwent rigorous testing across a diverse array of tasks encompassing image, audio, video, and mathematical understanding. Gemini Ultra demonstrated exceptional performance, surpassing state-of-the-art results on 30 out of 32 commonly-used academic benchmarks in the field. Achieving a score of 90.0%, this large language model is the first to outperform human experts in massive multitask language understanding (MMLU), covering 57 subjects, including math, physics, history, law, medicine, and ethics.
The first-generation Gemini models exhibit the ability to extract information with sophisticated reasoning from hundreds to thousands of documents, promising to accelerate breakthroughs in various fields from science to finance. Additionally, Gemini showcases proficiency in understanding, explaining, and generating advanced code in programming languages like Python, Java, C++, and Go.
Google emphasizes that Gemini adheres to its most comprehensive safety evaluations for AI models to date. The company has conducted novel research into potential risk areas such as cyber-offense, persuasion, and autonomy. Google Research’s adversarial testing techniques have been applied to identify critical safety issues in advance of Gemini’s deployment.
Starting December 6, Bard will operate with a refined version of Gemini Pro in over 170 countries and territories. On December 13, Gemini Pro will be accessible via the Gemini API in Google AI Studio or Google Cloud Vertex AI. Concurrently, Gemini Nano will debut on the Pixel 8 Pro, and Gemini is set to launch in Google Search, Ads, Chrome, and Duet AI in the coming months. Gemini Ultra will be made available to developers and enterprise customers in the early part of next year.
