The DICK’S Sporting Goods Foundation, in collaboration with the Local Initiatives Support Corporation (LISC), is distributing $1.275 million in grants to community organizations, schools, and parks in 14 cities and towns across the United States. This initiative, known as the Game On-Community Places to Play Initiative, is focused on improving sports facilities in under-resourced neighborhoods.
In the first round of funding, 15 non-profit community-based organizations have been selected to receive grants ranging from $50,000 to $100,000. The aim is to advance sports renovation projects in low- and moderate-income communities, fostering healthier and more vibrant spaces for youth and families.
Rick Jordan, Vice President of The DICK’S Sporting Goods Foundation, expressed excitement about the positive impact these grants will have on deserving athletes. He emphasized that the rejuvenation of sports facilities is an investment not only in infrastructure but also in the future of youth athletes.
The grant recipients were chosen through a competitive application process managed by LISC, requiring applicants to secure 1:1 match funding. Beyond administering the grant program, LISC will provide technical assistance to grantees to facilitate the progress of their projects.
Beverly Smith, LISC Vice President, highlighted the importance of sports in teaching young people about teamwork and community while promoting healthy bodies and minds. The partnership with The DICK’s Sporting Goods Foundation aims to invest in creating safe and quality sports facilities where youth and families can play, exercise, and spend time together.
The grants will address various renovation needs in the selected organizations, including the installation of lighting for tennis courts, the creation of outdoor basketball courts, the development of athletic fields, and the renovation of gymnasiums and equestrian centers. The 15 organizations benefiting from the Game On-Community Places to Play Initiative include schools, Boys & Girls Clubs, community development corporations, and parks foundations across diverse locations such as Boston, Dallas, Detroit, Jacksonville, Memphis, New York City, Philadelphia, Pittsburgh, San Diego, Spokane, and Wichita.
These initiatives align with the shared goal of creating safe, accessible, and inclusive spaces that promote physical activity and community engagement.
