By Alisha Rhodes
Renowned filmmaker and media tycoon, Tyler Perry, has inked a fresh, multi-year first-look agreement with Netflix, encompassing his roles as a writer, director, and producer for the streaming giant.
This creative partnership follows Perry’s November 2022 deal with Amazon Studios, where he committed to writing, directing, and producing four features for Prime Video. Perry’s extensive collaboration with Netflix in recent years, including the upcoming films “Six Triple Eight” and “Mea Culpa,” laid the groundwork for this new endeavor.
Executive produced by Kerry Washington, who also takes a leading role in the star-studded cast, “Six Triple Eight” showcases the remarkable true story of the first and only Women’s Army Corps unit of color stationed overseas during World War II. “Mea Culpa,” featuring Kelly Rowland and Trevante Rhodes, delves into the world of a criminal defense attorney who embarks on a case involving an artist accused of murdering his girlfriend.
Perry’s past Netflix film projects encompass the recent Humanitas Prize-winning “A Jazzman’s Blues,” a narrative of forbidden love that celebrated its world premiere in Toronto; “A Madea Homecoming,” the 12th installment of the billion-dollar Madea franchise, where Perry also graces the screen; and the gripping thriller “A Fall from Grace,” starring Crystal Fox.
Tyler Perry’s personal journey is soon to be portrayed on screen through “Maxine’s Baby: The Tyler Perry Story,” a documentary directed by Gelila Bekele and Armani Ortiz, produced for Amazon Studios and Bekele Films.
