Universal Music Group (UMG) and Stability AI are joining forces to shape what the future of music creation looks like — a future where generative AI and human creativity don’t compete, but collaborate. The world’s leading music company and the leading independent multi-modal AI developer have announced a strategic alliance to design next-generation tools for artists, producers, and songwriters worldwide.

At the heart of this partnership is a simple but powerful idea: keep the artist at the center. UMG and Stability AI will co-develop professional-grade music creation tools powered by responsibly trained AI models, built not to replace human artistry, but to amplify it. Together, their teams will explore new methods for composing, recording, and producing — collecting insights directly from musicians to ensure every tool enhances creative flow, respects rights, and safeguards artistic integrity.

Michael Nash, UMG’s Chief Digital Officer & EVP, emphasized that this collaboration reinforces UMG’s artist-first mission. “Our artists and songwriters are the cornerstone of our business,” Nash said. “With AI, as with everything we do, we start with what best supports their creative and commercial success. We will only consider advancing AI tools and products based on models that are trained responsibly.”

The alliance reflects UMG’s growing momentum in the AI space. Over the past few years, the company has inked industry-first agreements with YouTube, TikTok, and Meta — leading the charge to protect creative rights while exploring how AI can empower artists and improve fan engagement. From new ways to discover music to fair attribution models, UMG continues to push for a balanced, human-centered approach to innovation.

For Stability AI, the partnership marks another milestone in its mission to bring “commercially safe” generative models to the forefront of creative industries. Its flagship Stable Audio models are trained exclusively on licensed material, designed for professional use in music and sound generation. “This partnership marks the next chapter of music creation,” said Prem Akkaraju, CEO of Stability AI. “At Stability AI, we put the artist at the center and build AI around their unique needs — because real transformation has always come from a combination of art and science.”

Fresh off recent collaborations with Electronic Arts and WPP, Stability AI’s expansion into music solidifies the company’s role as a creative enabler across entertainment sectors. And for UMG, it’s another step in future-proofing the art form it champions — ensuring that technology enhances, not overshadows, the human spark behind every sound.
