Laced in Vision: SZA Takes Over as Vans Artistic Director

By Jayson Echo

SZA is officially bringing her vision to the Vans universe. The Grammy-winning musician has signed on as the brand’s Artistic Director, marking the beginning of a multi-year partnership that promises fresh campaigns, exclusive collections, and a cultural crossover only she could deliver.

Long before this collaboration, SZA was already a Vans devotee—especially partial to the chunky, nostalgic Knu Skool silhouette. Now, her first official campaign in the role, shot by Sophie Jones, spotlights her favorite sneaker in a sleek monochrome palette.

The move cements Vans and SZA’s shared spirit: playful, experimental, and unapologetically creative. According to the brand, she embodies the essence of its “Off the Wall” mantra. For SZA, the feeling is mutual.

“In Vans, I feel free!” she says. “I’ve been wearing Knu Skools and other styles for years; they’ve always had an ethos I connect with.”

This isn’t SZA’s first step into the footwear space—her 2022 Crocs collaborations became instant sell-outs. But her Vans role runs deeper, offering her the chance to directly shape the brand’s visual storytelling and product innovation.

“As Artistic Director,” she explains, “my mission is to show that joy, community, creativity, and fashion are all still intersectional. Humanity, culture, and connection are still the access points. I’ve learned that bravery and curiosity are the cures for uncertainty; it’s a lifestyle, and Vans champions that spirit. They stand where I stand, and I’m honored to invite a whole bunch of people to stand Off the Wall with us.”

If her debut campaign is any indication, this Vans era will be about more than sneakers—it’s a statement of art, culture, and belonging, all tied together with SZA’s signature touch.
