Sadder, Bloodier, Better: Netflix Confirms Cyberpunk: Edgerunners 2

Netflix has confirmed that Cyberpunk: Edgerunners is coming back with a vengeance. Officially announced at Anime Expo 2025, the long-rumored follow-up to the breakout anime hit is now in production, and it’s not pulling any punches. Titled simply Cyberpunk: Edgerunners 2, this 10-episode standalone story trades familiar faces for a fresh ensemble caught in the brutal orbit of Night City—a place where hope goes to die and revenge is a religion.

Returning to shape this next descent into chaos is Bartosz Sztybor, writer and showrunner from the first season. On stage during the “Behind the Scenes With Us Creators” panel, Sztybor offered a blunt mission statement: “I wasn’t satisfied with the sadness that I received from the audience. So, I want you to be even more sad now.” His vision for Edgerunners 2 is darker, crueler, and far more personal—a raw chronicle of redemption and revenge that refuses to let go.

But Sztybor isn’t just interested in tears—he’s committed to expanding the lore of Cyberpunk 2077 through deeply human stories. “Night City has a lot of stories to tell,” he shared. “I had a dream that it wouldn’t end with Edgerunners. There are more characters waiting in the shadows.”

Studio Trigger, the animation powerhouse behind the original series, is once again at the helm. This time, Kai Ikarashi—who directed the emotionally explosive Episode 6—is stepping up as the new series director. The creative team also reunites with screenwriter Masahiko Otsuka and lead character designer Kanno Ichigo (Promare), whose newly revealed teaser art leans into a grittier, more grounded tone.

Although Netflix hasn’t revealed a premiere date, production is officially underway. And if Sztybor’s parting words are anything to go by, fans should brace themselves: “It’ll be, of course, sadder, but it will also be darker, more bloody and more raw.”

Hope is a fragile thing in Night City—and it looks like Edgerunners 2 is ready to crush what’s left of it.
