From Wu-Tang to Tribeca: RZA’s “One Spoon of Chocolate” Serves a Vicious Slice of Justice

By Kyra Greene

It may not be on your radar yet, but One Spoon of Chocolate is the kind of film that demands attention—and earns it. Written, directed, and produced by Wu-Tang Clan’s legendary RZA, this gritty action-drama is a potent mix of personal narrative, Black resilience, and grindhouse flair. It makes its world premiere at the 2025 Tribeca Festival on June 8, and from what we’ve seen so far, this one’s going to leave a mark.

Starring Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse’s Shameik Moore, the film centers on Unique—a former soldier wrongfully imprisoned for a crime he didn’t commit. Now a free man, he settles in a sleepy Ohio town hoping to build a quiet life with the help of his cousin Ramsey (played by Power Rangers and I’m a Virgo standout RJ Cyler). But peace is short-lived. Unique quickly finds himself at odds with a corrupt, white supremacist sheriff and his violent crew, whose sinister grip on the town hides a string of disappearances involving young Black men.

What starts as a character study of a man rebuilding his life spirals into a cathartic, blood-soaked tale of retribution—with blades drawn and fists flying. Think First Blood meets Get Out with a Wu-Tang twist.

The ensemble cast is a compelling one: Blair Underwood, Paris Jackson, Emyri Crutchfield, Michael Harney, and Harry Goodwins round out the supporting lineup. And while the action is brutal and unrelenting, RZA—drawing on his own Ohio upbringing—roots the film in something deeper: the trauma of systemic injustice and the power of reclamation.

Tribeca programmer Matt Barone described One Spoon of Chocolate as a “brutal action throwback with plenty on its mind beyond cracked skulls and severed limbs.” And he’s right. There’s rage here, but also poetry. Legacy. Love. Even a touch of hope.

If Rebel Ridge had you at the edge of your seat, expect One Spoon of Chocolate to pull the whole rug out. This isn’t just another indie action flick. It’s a scream from the margins, wrapped in swords and soul.

One Spoon of Chocolate premieres June 8 at the 2025 Tribeca Festival. A wide release has yet to be announced, but once it drops, consider it required viewing.
