Larry J. Sims is more than just a dreamer; he’s a visionary who has transformed his early fascination with beauty into a thriving career as one of the world’s most sought-after hair artists. Born and raised in Chicago, Sims’ journey from the Windy City to the pinnacles of the hair industry is nothing short of inspirational. Behind his iconic celebrity stylist persona lies a humble individual with talents that span entrepreneurship and social artistry. In this exclusive interview, we delve into the life and career of Larry J. Sims, exploring his roots, rise to fame, and profound impact on the industry.

When we asked Larry about his path to becoming one of the industry’s most in-demand stylists, his response was both candid and reflective. He reminisced about growing up in beauty salons, where he spent countless hours with his mother and sister. Watching stylists work their magic left a lasting impression on young Larry, though he never imagined he would one day join their ranks.

As he grew older, Larry’s creative talents led him into the world of dance. His big break came with the girl group BLAQUE, gradually opening doors in the industry. In 1999, he moved to Los Angeles and connected with industry giants like Missy Elliott & Janet Jackson. These early connections proved invaluable as his career progressed. Despite his success as a dancer, Larry’s passion for styling remained strong. He often transformed his friends’ looks for performances, which planted the seed for his future career.

In 2002, Larry made the pivotal decision to return to Chicago and study cosmetology. It took him 1 year of hard work & dedication to complete school. Through Larry’s love of music, in 2003, he then got an opportunity to learn the ropes of becoming a music industry A & R under Missy Elliott’s wings. He worked for her label, Goldmine Inc for 2 years but never lost his passion for styling. By 2005, he had his professional credentials under his belt and returned to Los Angeles to pursue his dream. A pivotal moment was styling Victoria Beckham’s iconic bob cut in 2007, which solidified his reputation and connected him with influential figures in entertainment.

Larry Sims’ work is nothing short of artistry. When asked about his inspiration, he explains that it stems from a blend of personal experiences and a relentless drive for self-improvement. Each client presents a unique canvas, and Larry’s goal is always to elevate their look, considering factors such as the event, outfit, accessories, and makeup. For him, styling is a collaborative effort, a harmonious blend of elements to create a cohesive and stunning result.

He emphasizes the importance of professional training and certification, particularly for those aspiring to follow in his footsteps but lacking financial resources. Larry acknowledges the high costs of cosmetology education and the ongoing debate over licensing requirements in the U.S. Despite these challenges, he advises aspiring stylists to work hard, save diligently, and invest in their education. The tools and techniques learned in cosmetology school have been instrumental in his success, and he believes proper certification makes a significant difference in the industry.

A hallmark of Larry’s work is his expertise with African-American hair. He finds this hair type the most versatile and enjoyable to style, offering endless possibilities. While it can be challenging for some, Larry’s familiarity with it, rooted in his cultural heritage, has enabled him to master its intricacies and celebrate its unique beauty.

One of Larry’s proudest ventures is “Flawless By Gabrielle Union,” a hair care line co-created with his long-time friend Gabrielle Union. Their partnership, built on two decades of friendship and professional collaboration, resulted in a product line launched just three months into the pandemic. Despite the timing, they succeeded by offering high-quality products at affordable prices, meeting a market need, and achieving significant success.

Looking ahead to 2025, Larry J. Sims has exciting plans, including a collaboration with a major retail brand to create a unique salon experience. He’s also involved in a significant television project and is working on a book detailing his artistic journey. With his track record of success and innovation, there’s no doubt that Larry will continue to dazzle us with his talent and creativity.

We eagerly anticipate his future endeavors and wish him the very best as he continues to shape and inspire the world of hairstyling.
